Building Water Confidence, Before You Even Get In
Most adult anxiety around water isn't really about swimming technique, it's about control. Before your first session, it helps to know exactly what to expect: you'll always be somewhere you can stand or hold on, Adriel works at your pace not a fixed curriculum, and nobody is thrown in at the deep end, literally. Knowing the shape of a session in advance removes a lot of the uncertainty that drives the nerves.
Breathing Technique Basics
Controlled breathing is the single biggest lever for feeling calm in water. The habit worth building on dry land first: breathe out slowly and fully through your mouth or nose while your face is down or turned away, then take a quick, relaxed breath in when you turn or lift your head. Panic in water is very often just a breathing pattern that's gone shallow and fast, slowing it down changes almost everything else.
What To Expect At Your First Lesson
Arrive with swimwear, a towel, and goggles if you have them. Adriel will start by understanding your goals and any concerns, then get a feel for your current comfort level in the water before any technique work begins. Sessions run for 30 minutes, in a small group of 5, at Harris Academy in South Ockendon on Saturdays. There's no test, no pass or fail, just an honest starting point to build from.
Understanding Pool Safety Basics
A few habits worth having regardless of your level: always check water depth before entering somewhere unfamiliar, know where the nearest pool exit and lifeguard station are, and never swim alone in open water even once you're confident in a pool. Adriel is a qualified lifeguard and holds a certificate in water lifesaving, so safety is built into every session, not treated as an afterthought.
Progress Isn't Always Linear
It's completely normal to feel like you've taken a step back after a great session, tiredness, stress and even the water temperature can all affect how a lesson feels. What matters is the trend over weeks, not any single session. This is part of why Aqua Jetz tracks progress properly rather than relying on how any one Saturday happened to go.
